The constant search for fresh inspiration and new techniques sometimes takes designers on an unusual course.  With this in mind, I have decided to review a book that on first appearance has nothing to do with floral design at all.  However, the creation of floral images using carved fruit and vegetables has a long tradition in the Far East and I am sure that I am not alone in marvelling at the end product.  This book explores that very subject and I have to say that it’s fascinating.

The book is well laid out and has a plethora of step-by-step designs for you to follow.  Now I would be the first to say that I would be surprised (actually extremely surprised) if any of our readers opted to make a vegetable man or hedgehog.  But don’t be put off because many of the ideas are works of art and some could be transferred to floral design.  There are masks, carved leaves, carved flowers and some have even been put into arrangements.  OK the arrangements themselves are not for us BUT (and it is a big but) the techniques reveal possibilities that I haven’t thought of before.
