The team from Waterlily Pond have previously featured in Fusion Flowers when they created the welcome design at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. However, this time the highly talented team have turned their attention to the annual flower festival held at the amazing Cathedral in San Francisco. The team were invited to create a display which visitors would find as they entered the Cathedral. This required the WOW factor but they also wanted their concept to ‘speak’ to people and elected to feature water.
In Issue 53, Natasha from Waterlily Pond explains how the team tackled their design from mocked up cardboard cut outs through to the scaffolding above the font to allow them to hang their 300 glass units each holding an orchid and even their sculpted copper piping.
The resultant design was spectacular. To attempt to create an ethereal arrangement on this scale is quite a challenge but the team certainly managed to pull it off. It is extremely rare for designers at this level to agree to allow people an insight into how they work. We are therefore delighted that they have allowed our readers to do just this.
