Twists and Turns in Crete
The work of Belgian designer, Geert Pattyn, is almost universally recognised as being some of the best in the world. At this year’s Interflora Helas seminar on the beautiful island of Crete, Geert revealed just why he has achieved his reputation. Participants were overwhelmed by the diversity and ingenuity he displayed when working with various types of foliage to create backdrops or mechanics for his flowers.
Bouquet after bouquet was produced during his 3-day session and each one more beautiful than the one before. Clearly the students were inspired as they filled their notebooks with line drawings and notes to use when they went home. On the third day, Geert changed tack and allocated everyone an outdoor project to complete. Mechanics and concepts had already been partially completed using materials found in the area – students were then given instructions on how to create their own forms of land art. They were then placed into groups, preferably with as many different nationalities as possible, to create their work. The results were stunning, colourful and energetic. It was truly amazing to see how the groups coped when, on occasion, some of them could only communicate through sign language!
This was a remarkable project and one that we were delighted to be allowed to record for our readers.
