Japanese Contemporary Floral Art

Naoki Sasaki’s latest book….

It is a rare treat indeed for people in the West to see and be allowed to appreciate the work of the Japanese Masters.  Naoki Sasaki is one young man whose work had previously come to my attention.  The first time was when he represented Japan in Australia at the Interflora World Cup (see Issue 21 of Fusion Flowers magazine for the report).  The presentation of his work and in particular his booth which he’d lined in black rubber and then filled the floor cavity with water thoughtfully providing stepping stones for the judges to get closer to his designs, was awesome in the true sense of the word.  My next encounter was during the judging process for the first International Floral Art Annual in Belgium.  Naoki won the premier award outright – all of the judges agreed that his work was ground breaking and highly original.

I am delighted to say that Naoki has now produced a book which features not only his winning designs, but more of his remarkable concepts.  The book is entitled Japanese Contemporary Floral Art.  I accept that Japanese design is not for everyone but, for me, his designs find a place somewhere deep in my heart.  I really don’t wish to highlight one concept more than another but – if I was forced to – it would be his suspended table design!  This was redolent of his hanging table design in Australia and it was there that I first fell in love with his work.

We are thrilled to be able to feature a selection of the designs from his book which we hope readers will find as inspiring as we do.

You can find the full story and amazing images in Issue 48 of Fusion Flowers magazine and Japanese Contemporary Floral Art by Naoki Sasaki is available to buy online through Marketplace.
