Jungle Gems

Gregor Lersch designs in a rain forest….

“I’m calling from the jungle.  I’m in a rain forest in Guadeloupe…” – this telephone call from Gregor Lersch has lead to one of the most interesting articles we’ve ever had in Fusion Flowers magazine.

Picture the scene, you’re a European Master Florist of international standing, you’re invited to fly to the other side of the world and when you arrive, all you have to work with is your knife, secateurs, saw and some wire.  From these humble beginnings, a monumental project transformed the jungle into an outdoor exhibition area.

Gregor Lersch together with eight pupils from very different backgrounds – only two were actual florists from shops, one was a grower of tropical flowers, three were social workers and teachers, one planner and organiser of exhibitions and other events and one flower arranger from Martinique – explored just what can be done with imagination and a lot of hard work!

In a world exclusive, Gregor writes about his experience as being one of the most fulfilling of his career.  The aim of the social workers is to take the information back from this school to teach young, under privileged children how to make a living for themselves.  By anyone’s standards – this is a remarkable project which saw their jungle exhibition covered by lots of Caribbean television channels.  The photography by Matthias Schäfer who flew in from Paris to cover the event – captures the scene perfectly.
