My goodness – this is certainly one of the most colourful books that we have ever had the good fortune to review in Book Worm. You can almost feel the Australian sunshine oozing off the pages!
Gregory Milner is a highly respected Australian florist, floristry teacher and judge; is the principal of the Marjorie Milner College (founded by his late mother) and has already written several books. In his latest title, Fresh Cut Flowers, Greg begins by giving practical information on flowers; how they actually function; how to condition and care for them; what to look out for when buying them; basics on how to arrange them; how to retail them including wedding and corporate occasions and then he offers one of the most colourful A – Z directories of flowers I have ever come across. Within each botanical listing he notes several colloquial names, uses, care and handling details, growing conditions and a brief history.
In effect, he has managed to create a volume that would be ideal for students, libraries, flower arrangers and florists alike – because there is always more for us to learn. Greg even offers a visual break down of each flower name so that it can be correctly pronounced! Can I just mention that the photography used is some of the best that I’ve ever seen – and that’s saying something! So not only is this book packed with information – it gives the reader a visual injection of sunshine – what more could you ask for?
