AB The long-awaited revised version of the Straight from the Heart Sympathy Collection holds a few surprises in store for those of you wanting to update your library. The book is, as to be expected from the Cowlings, nicely presented with clean, clear visuals which would make this a perfect addition to every shop as it could be used to provide customers with suggestions for suitable work.

The work itself is very varied and tasteful and there would surely be something to suit almost every client here. In many of the designs, there is a strong feeling of the English countryside and garden and this is particularly evident in the profusion of David Austin roses. There are also several clever inclusions which use a stronger, European visual appeal together with "simple" bouquets which allow every piece of botanical material used to be appreciated. Suggestions abound from the idea of a basket of rose petals to scatter at the burial, to woven ophiopogon leaves used at the basis for a heart form.

The very talented Cowling duo have added a great deal of information to this book which now provides full details of all the materials used in each piece of work together with tips and techniques. This is therefore perfect for those starting out in business or who are uncertain as to how certain aspects of the work are created with suggestions on how to conduct a consultation. There is also a botanical/ common names glossary which will be particularly useful as flowers are often known under different names in different countries and even in different parts of a country. There is even information on the use of floral foam and how to prepare it correctly! Believe it or not, this information is not untoward as we regularly encounter people who still soak foam incorrectly!

Tucked away at the back of the book are six pages with suggestions of ideal things to use in this type of work together with seasonal ideas. All in all, this book is great value for money and, as I said before, would be something to have in every shop.
