AB If there is one thing I have learned about the work of Rob Plattel it is that I should expect the unexpected. In Natural Rhythms Rob explores the potential for the use of natural materials - roots, shells, bark, flowers, leaves etc to enhance or create the subject matter.
The result is, in part, spectacular due in no small part to outstanding photography.
The book is subdivided into five sections entitled "Root", "Structure", "Leaf ", "Flower" and "Seed Fruit Harvest". Some of you may recall the jaw-droppingly gorgeous wall at the 2005 House of Plants and Flowers Hortifair in Amsterdam when Rob created what can only be described as a wallscape using only one type of shell. In this book he creates a series of similar wall designs, installations and outdoor landscapes; again using only one type of material, but this time either Sambucus, Helianthus, Shells, Quercus, Fraxinus, Robinia or Driftwood. This work has more than a passing reference to the work of Master landscape artist, Andy Goldsworthy but with Rob's own touch of drama.
Here is the man who dared to use high end wallpaper with all its inherent problems of dominance to create startlingly modern Dutch Master designs which few managed to master. His use of visual rhythm is quite simply brilliant and be under no illusions, you have to know what you're doing to facilitate the use of this amount of movement, pattern and colour - and be able to see each and every flower that is used. You can tell that Rob enjoyed working on this project. He must have the patience of a Saint to have been able to create his magic carpet made only from petals!
There are a lot of fun things in the book too particularly the "decorations" for the adolescents! Who wouldn't want to create a brooch the size of a human head for a gorgeous young woman!
This is the sixth book in a series of Monographs from Stichting Kunstboek - each has something to offer - each has the stamp of a floral magician andeach will become a collector's item.
